The reasons why Tyler Colsen is going to the Feb 26th & Feb 27th Master Pedro Sauer BJJ Seminar

Whenever you enter a new community you immediately learn about the superstars that lead these groups.  When I began training in Brazilian Jiu Jistu in 2006, there were a number of people that were more than just names but rather they ventured to the realm of mythical.

For the most part these individuals had a last name of Gracie.  But my instructors wouldn’t stop talking about a man named Pedro Sauer.  So when I went to my first seminar with the Professor, I was immediately struck by two things.  First was his instruction and second the color (or should I say colors) of his belt.

I had been to a couple of seminars by this point and the material that was covered was always predetermined.   So when Pedro started the seminar with “what are you guys having trouble with?”  I was astounded.

What was even more amazing was the fact that for the next three hours we went over techniques that at first glance were simple and intuitive, but turned more of mindsets on how to handle different situations.  I realized that good instructors will only focus on a specific technique.  They teach how to do something and than move on to the next thing.  Never really connecting the pieces to the puzzle.  Great instructors, however, teach a technique but they relate that to the entire game.  And that’s what Prof. Pedro Sauer delivers always.

From that time I’ve attended a total of three seminars taught by Pedro Sauer.  And if I thought I wasn’t going to receive instruction that wasn’t worth my time and money I would gracefully decline attending.  But with the Professor I know that each time I see him I will experience something new and with the highest level of instruction.

Regarding Tuesday’s Classes

Posted on 10. Jan, 2011 by in Blog, Oregon Martial Arts

I am flying in from a Great Martial Art Business Seminar with Master Lloyd Irvin in Washington, D.C. today (Monday, Jan 10th).

I plan on teaching tommrow, but I heard a rumor that there might be a snow storm tommorow.

I just wanted to remind everyone that  Oregon Martial Arts Club’s policy for closures due to bad weather is based on if the Tigard-Tualatin School District is closed or not.  See this website to find out:  Tigard-Tualatin Sch. Dist.

If you have any questions or concerns e-mail me at oregonmartialarts@gmail.com or call me at the school @  503-598-8055 (it goes directly to my cellular.)

Hopefully we will see you in class tommorow,

OMA 5 Week Cycle for Junior Dragons/ Teen Tigers

Posted on 03. Jan, 2011 by in Blog, Kids Classes, Oregon Martial Arts

We now have a more improved way of testing our Junior Dragons and our Teen Tigers.  The purpose behind the new 5 week cycle testing process is to make sure students are coming class every week to get the material they need for their next test, to make sure all instructors are working the same thing, and ultimately to guarantee better test results for students.

Now every student will test for either their Black Stripes or their Next Belt all on the same day.

Please save these dates on your calender.

For the Total Defense System there are 11 opportunities to test in 2011:

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Wednesday,  Oct 5th, 2011

Wednesday, Nov 9th, 2011

Wednesday, Dec 7th, 2011

Classes will go in 5 week cycles.

Week 1 will focus on Jiu-Jitsu (Ground Grappling) Techniques & Muay Thai Combinations for next Belt, and Message of the Week #1.

Week 2 will focus on Self-Defense Techniques & Muay Thai Combinations for next Belt, and Message of the Week #2

Week 3 will focus on the Endurance Round for Belt Test, and Message of the Week #3

Week 4 will focus on Review for Testing, Red Stripes, and Message of the Week #4

Week 5 will focus on Black Stripe Testing & Belt Testing over all Previous Material.

Testing and the New 5 Week Cycle
Beginning Belts will need 1 Black Stripe + 1 Red Stripe Tip to do a Belt Test
Intermediate Belts 2 Black Stripe + 1 Red Stripe Tip to do a Belt Test
Advanced Belts 3 Black Stripe + 1 Red Stripe Tip to do a White Stripe or Belt Test

For example a Green Belt will get his Black Stripe on Month One, and Month Two, and then he will get his Red Stripe and test for his next belt on Month 3 and the next week he will test for his Blue Belt

For Purple Belts and up we will use White Stripes to indicate degrees.  So a Purple 3 Belt that is about to test will have 3 white strips on one side, and 3 Black Stripes on the other side of his belt.  On week 4 he will get his red stripe so he will be able to test for Red Belt the next week on Week 5.

Champions Have An Indomitable Spirit!

Posted on 31. Dec, 2010 by in Blog

Courtesy of Kyoshi Steve LaVallee

Have you ever noticed how some people always seem to have an unstoppable upbeat attitude and always maintain a strong zest for life?

Black Belt Champions call this indomitable spirit. Champions seem to have an extra amount of energy and enthusiasm in almost everything they do. Not only do they possess a powerful non-quitting spirit, they have a tremendous excitement for the martial arts and for personal growth and development.

This spirit is a positive energy force that shows their passion. You can see it in their eyes; you can hear it in their voice; you can feel it whenever you’re around them.

A person with this spirit is always more ambitious than the average person. They are likely to accomplish more, take more action and be very achievement-oriented. They are far less likely to show discouragement, because they are better prepared to handle the setbacks that they are bound to encounter.

They tend to influence others in a positive fashion. Their enthusiasm and optimism becomes contagious to others. Most people agree that enthusiasm is contagious. Unfortunately, so is the lack of it. Wouldn’t you rather be the person that brings people up to a higher level of performance instead of the person that drags people down to mediocrity?

Black Belt Champions always bring people up. So spread your spirit—your indomitable spirit!
