Master Rigan Machado, is one of the living legend in the art for those who take Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes. Many students consider him as one of the greatest grapplers in Machado Jiu-Jitsu.

Rigan holds a prestigious rank as an 8th degree red and Black Belt from taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes under Grandmaster Carlos Gracie Jr.

Rigan is a former World Champion of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a veteran of Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Submission Wrestling World Championship. ADCC is a competition where professional athletes from the highest level of jiu-jitsu, judo, shooto, wrestling, sambo and mixed martial arts come together to test their grappling ability.

At an early age of 5, he began training together with his cousins the Gracies. Like all children, they took training as a game rather than something they wanted to do for a career. His serious training and competitions started at age 14. This is when Rigan started to train everyday on the mat. From the age of 14 through 21, he won the World Championship every year in every belt division. He collected 365 wins and one loss in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition and created a record by finishing 19 matches by submission.

Ironically Rigan Machado holds a victory over Ron Tripp, well known in the MMA world especially among submission grappling practitioners Ron Tripp is the only person to hold official victory over the veteran Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter Rickson Gracie. Tripp was promoted to 10th degree in Sambo in 1995, 6th dan by USA Judo in 2006 and became America’s first Distinguished Masters of Sports.

Rigan Machado teaches Jiu Jitsu Classes out his California Academy, he had a great record in his 13 years of competition in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Master Rigan Machado is one of the most interesting and unique people in the martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because of his desire to bring the best out of all his students. He takes pride from his philosophy that he will always be a student of the art. He makes sure that his students will receive the best from him in all the Jiu Jitsu Classes that he teaches.

Many of his training sessions were intensive under the tutelage of his two instructors Carlos Gracie Jr. and Rolls Gracie. He has also spent much of his training with his brothers John Machado, Jean Jacques Machado, Roger Machado, Carlos Machado, and his cousins Rorion Gracie, Rickson Gracie, Rillion Gracie and his Uncle Carlson Gracie Sr.

Ernesto Hoost – An Inspiration to Muay Thai Kickboxing in Tigard

Ernersto “Mr. Perfect” Hoost was a Light and Super Heavyweight Muay Thai Kickboxer who fought out of Hoorn, Netherlands. Standing 6 feet 2 inches, he began competing when he was 18 and amassed a record of 97 wins, 21 losses with 1 draw in his more than 20 years in the business. In his career, he had beaten fighter which are very popular and has garnered many championships. In 2006, he proclaimed his retirement and ended a very successful career in the combat sports.

Born on July 11, 1965 in Heemskerk, North Holland, Ernesto first engaged in soccer prior practicing Muay Thai Kickboxing. After not making the cut for a team, he realized that soccer wasn’t meant for him and turned his focus into another sport.

At the age of 15, he then shifted to Muay Thai Kickboxing and enrolled himself in Sokundo gym. There he trained for six years under Tom Vriend before he competed in his first match on December 11, 1983 against Wim Scharrenberg. Ernesto knocked out his opponent in the second round, and after that won nine straight in a row before losing to Ernest Simmons in 1986.

As his career progressed, he accumulated some losses and also garnered numerous titles. From 1987-1992, he won the 10 titles overall. These include the WMAT, WKA and Savate world titles. In addition to those, he also won the WKA, Savate, ISKA European championships, and Dutch Muay Thai Kickboxing title.

In 1993, Ernesto finished 2^nd in K-1 Grand Pix in his debut, he won the WMTA as well as the WKA titles, and emerged on the top in the K-1 Grand Pix. In K-1, he defeated Peter Aerts in the quarter final, Maurice Smith in the sem-final, before he lost to Branko Cikatić in the finale. For the WMTA and WKA, he overwhelmed Tasis Petridis to secure both titles. And finally in K-1, he won the title by defeating Manson Gibson, Adam Watt and Changpuek Kiatsongrit. He continued his dominance and won the K-1 Tournament and lSKA Light Heavyweight World title the next year.

As he carried on with his career, Ernesto took the K-1 Grand Pix in 1997 and became 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 K-1 World Grand Prix champion. Along the way, he defeated tough adversaries and idolize by practitioners of Muay Thai Kickboxing in Tigard such as Mirko Filipović, Mike Bernardo, Mark Hunt, Cyril Abidi , Ray Sefo and Musashi. He also had mixed results as he fought Peter Aerts, Andy Hug, Jérôme Le Banner, Sam Greco, and Francisco Filho. And finally, he has faced losses to Bob Sapp, Remy Bonjasky and Semmy Schilt.

On December 2, 2006, Ernesto retired after he lost in the semis of the K-1 World Grand Pix to Semmy via unanimous decision.

Ernesto is an orthodox powerful fighter known to Muay Thai Kickboxing in Tigard with quick hands and legs. Aside from Sokudo, he also represented Vos Gym and trained under Johan Vos. In his wins, 62 came in the way of knockouts and 35 via decisions.

Andy Hug – Respected by Muay Thai Kickboxing in Portland

A Heavyweight fighter from Wohlen, Switzerland, Andy Hug (September 7, 1964 – August 24, 2000) was a professional Kickboxer and Karate competitor who was one of the toughest fighters of his generation. Andy, who began training in the martial arts during his teenage years, was a force to be reckoned with in both combat sports. He has won title fights including a World title in Karate, and also had success in kickboxing as he held numerous Championships. In his career, he held a record of 10-1 in Seidokaikan Karate, and 38 wins, 9 losses and 1 draw in Kickboxing.

Born in Zurich, Switzerland, Andy began playing soccer at the age of six and was part of the Swiss under-16 team. When he was 11, he commenced his training in Karate at Wohlen Karate Academy under the tutelage of Werner Schenker.

In 1979, he won his first title, the Oyama Cup by the time he was 15, and since then had been and outstanding Karateka. From 1981 to 1991, he competed in Kyokushin Karate tournaments and won 10 championships and was a runner-ups in a few tournaments as well.

In 1992, Andy won the Seidokaikan Karate World Cup when he defeated Taiei Kin in the final round. And in 1993, he placed second in the same event after he lost to Masaaki Satake via Tameshiwari in their bout that had to go an extra round to determine the winner. He finished his career in Seidokaikan with 10-1 record knocking out two of his opponents.

On April 30, 1993, Andy Hug made his K-1 Kickboxing. He defeated Nobuaki Kakuda by left knee strike that resulted in TKO.

Since that day, his career advanced in K-1 Kickboxing, he became more well-known worldwide for his wins. He won over Rob van Esdonk via KO in 1994 for UKF World title (which he defended later in his career twice).

In 1996, Andy won the K-1 Grand Prix and the WMTC World Super Heavyweight title. In the K-1 Grand Prix, he defeated Duane Van Der Merwe, Ernesto Hoost (who beat him three times in his career) in the elimination and Mike Bernardo in the finals. For the WMTC, he knocked out Stan Longinidis and was named the new champion. Moreover, he also won the WKA World Muay Thai title over Masaaki Satake via unanimous decision. He defended the title four times and held it for four years.

Aside from Ernesto, Andy also had mixed results against fighters like Bernardo, Sam Greco and Peter Aerts. He also holds notable wins over Jérôme Le Banner, Musashi, Glaube Feitosa and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipović.

On August 17, 2000, Andy was diagnosed with acute leukemia. On August 24 the same year, many fans of K-1 Kickboxing were shocked when they heard Andy had passed away. He was 35 and left his son and wife.

Andy was a southpaw fighter who was very popular with his axe kicks. Aside from this, he also used spinning back kick and turning heel hook kick which are rarely seen in Kickboxing.

In his career, he represented Team Andy. In his kickboxing wins, 22 came via knockouts and 16 via decisions.

Michael Bernardo – Respected by Muay Thai Kickboxing in Tigard

Considered by many as a one of the top fighters of his generation, the late Michael “Mike” Bernardo is a Muay Thai Kickboxer from Cape Town, South Africa. A heavyweight fighter standing at a towering 6 feet 4 inches, he garnered 54 wins, 18 losses, 3 draws, 1 no contest. Bernardo won four titles in his Muay Thai Kickboxing career. He also competed in boxing and was a one-time WBF World Heavyweight title holder.

Born on July 28, 1969, Bernardo began his training in martial arts in karate when he was 12 years of age. He engaged himself in martial arts training in order to protect himself from bullies. As a kid who loved sports, he also boxed, surfed, and played rugby.

In 1993 Bernardo simultaneously started his boxing and Muay Thai Kickboxing career. He fought 16 fights and ended with 11 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw. He won the WBF World Heavyweight Championship over Daniel Jerling via TKO, and defended the title once against Peter McNeeley. Due to not being active since his last title defense, he was stripped of the title in May 2002.

Bernardo started his Muay Thai Kickboxing training after he met ex-boxing champ Steve Kalakoda. He and Steve were acquainted in a military service and since that day, Mike trained under his direction, and conditioned himself for competition.

Mike Bernardo competed in his hometown of Cape Town, South Africa, Italy, and Russia, before joining the K-1 promotion. Aside from K-1, fans of Muay Thai Kickboxing in Tigard saw him in WAKO, World Kickboxing Association (WKA), and World Olympic Kickboxing (WOK). Overall, he won third place in the 1995, 1998 and the 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix, second in the 1996 K-1 World Grand Prix, and he was the winner of the 2000 K-1 World Grand Prix beating Mirko Filipović in the finals. Moreover, he is also the 1996 WKA Muay Thai Super Heavyweight World champion, the 1998 WAKO Pro Muay Thai Super Heavyweight World champion, the 2004 WKA Muay Thai Super Heavyweight World champ, and a one-time WOK Super Heavyweight frontrunner. He has beaten the likes of Peter Aerts, Andy Hug, Francisco Filho, and Branco Cikatic.

Mike Bernardo was an orthodox fighter with knockout power. In his kickboxing career, he knocked out 42 of 54 of his competitors.

Aside from those combat sports, enthusiasts of Muay Thai Kickboxing in Tigard saw him in an MMA fight that went to a draw with Nobuhiko Takada.

Mike Bernardo passed away at the age of 42 in his home city of Cape Town on February 14, 2012.
