WHY OREGON MARTIAL ARTS GRACIE JIU-JITSU PROGRAM?

* Authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Instruction from a 1st Degree Black Belt Instructor from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil with over 30 years of training.

* We teach the original self-defense techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, with an emphasis of doing Jiu-jitsu for the street not just for points at a tournament.

* We teach Gracie Jiu-Jitsu that focuses on developing technique and leverage not moves based on muscle and power.

* Strong Competition Team for those interested in competing in Sport BJJ

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the only self-defense system in the world that effectively deals with self-defense on the ground. It doesn’t matter if you’re a man, woman, or child, nor does it matter if you are small, weak, strong, or “over the hill,” Gracie Jiu-Jitsu will give you the tools to defend yourself in a real world attack.

Founder Professor Helio Gracie is the mastermind behind Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. At 135 lbs. Grandmaster Helio modified the traditional jiu-jitsu to work based on technique and leverage rather than speed and strength. He is the father of the famous Ultimate Fighting Champion Royce Gracie.

“ Jiu-jitsu is first and foremost an art of combat, all the improvements that I made were with the goal of maintaining that objective.” – Grandmaster Helio Gracie

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Students Learn:

* How to defend against punches and kicks from the standing position.

* How to neutralize an attacker’s stand up aggression while taking them to the ground, and maintaining the top position.

* How to defend and submit a larger opponent from the bottom position.

* Practical self -defense, including chokes, joint-locks, from both the standing and ground position.

* How to defend against and attacker armed with a gun, stick or a knife.

Oregon Martial Arts is the main headquarters for the Pedro Sauer Association Representatives in Oregon.

Oregon Martial Arts is the best place to learn Jiu Jitsu. I’ve had the pleasure and honor to train with Professor Anibal for the past 3 yrs now. I have trained with him in 3 locations, and my favorite has been Oregon Martial Arts. My experience at OMA has been great not only for the level of Jiu-jitsu instruction, but also very importantly its cleaness, vibe, and the quality of the structure. Everyone one at OMA has always been very friendly, and pleasurable to train with. It is motivating to go to an academy where you know it is clean and well taken care of, and fun to train at. Plus, they often bring Master Pedro Sauer to teach seminars that are always fun, full of energy and new moves, and a great opportunity to make new friends and train with Jiu-Jitsu students from other academies. I strongly reccomend Oregon Martial Arts for jiu-jitsu fans of any age and skill level -Thiago Corazza

Oregon Martial arts is a great place to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and to get in shape. The instructors are top notch and care about what they do. They are passionate about Jiu Jitsu and really care about the students. Sean and Anibal are both very good instructors and both have very effective teaching styles that allow students to easily learn the techniques and skills. I would recommend Oregon Martial Arts to anyone looking to get the highest level of instruction in Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai in a gym where everyone is friendly. Oregon Martial Arts has also hosted several in house Jiu-Jitsu tournaments that encourage people to compete and take their Jiu-Jitsu game to the next level. You will not be disappointed if you sign up here. Sean also runs several kids classes so people of all ages can learn Martial Arts.-David Adams

“I think that in order to truly learn Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, you need to do so in a relaxed and friendly environment. Where your not worried about getting hurt, but trying to learn positions and techniques. In my experience Oregon Martial Arts provides that environment. I’ve been training here since 2006 and still love coming to class every week.” – Ben Snyder

“Their focus on technique and years of practical experience make it so that anyone learn effective ways to protect themselves without having to be big and strong. And if losing weight is your goal….I lost 20 lbs in the first 2 months there and have stayed that way for the last year and a half!”- Erik L. Whitney, CSCS

BJJ in Tigard

“During my time at his school, Sean has shown a true passion for the Martial Arts and his students. Since I first began classes in 2007, he has grown the facility into an amazing meeting place where his students can share ideas and techniques with each other. I gained knowledge of not only the martial Arts but also how to apply the philosophy of the teachings to everyday life.”

“I would highly recommend Sean and his school to anyone who is either looking to gain a skill set for competition and self defense or who is looking for a effective means to exercise and stay fit.”- Joshua Paul

“Sean Haley is the head Instructor at Oregon Martial Arts. He offers world class training in the area. The Jiu Jitsu program they offer is top notch and people are encouraged to help each other develop and improve. Without Sean’s instruction I wouldn’t be as far along as I am in my own personal development.”-Joe Heller, Instructor at the Source Academy

“Sean Haley provides excellent martial arts instruction. Classes at Oregon Martial Arts are both challenging and very enjoyable. The instructors are very friendly and knowledgeable, and they will challenge you to reach your goals. As of the year 2010 I have trained at OMAC for over 3 years and I’m still learning and enjoying every class.”- Brian Wiltse,  Instructor at Stayton Martial Arts

My experience in Training at Oregon Martial arts Club was something i will never forget. I had trained here from 2008 till 2010 and i never experienced any problems. Sean, the Instructor of OMAC is a very professional and caring person. He knows how to encourage and motivate people to keep going and succeed in there training. The overall atmosphere at OMAC is excellent. There is no big egos involved in this club, everyone is treated like a close friend. If you want a place to get into awesome shape and develop good friendships this is the place to go. But come prepared this isn’t a jog in the park. Muay Thai and Brazilian Ju Jitsu is intense especially with Sean and Anibal in charge. Have no doubt in yourself though, i came into this club completely inexperienced and ended up assisting in instructing within the first year and a half. If you are willing to push it, this club will definitely take you to the next level and beyond.- Brandon Snodgrass, College Student

At Oregon Martial Arts the teaching and instruction in Brazilian Jujitsu is the best that I have ever come across. I feel very fortunate and privileged to have found such a place. I can see what I was missing out on, especially when I compare it to the training I was receiving before. At other places I had been before there was not much technique being taught so everyone just resorted to trying things out till they “worked” or attempted what they saw on television.

I’ve improved more over the past year than I did in the six years of my previous training. This is a testament to the excellent instruction of Anibal Lobo, who is able to give details about details. He cares about teaching and also the students’ well- being. After graduating from law school I was ready to further my knowledge of Brazilian jujitsu and Oregon Martial Arts has been the best place for me to do so. -Moises R. Ceja, Law Clerk, Oregon Law Center

I attended classes with OMAC for barely over a year. Sean, Anibal, and Ken are excellent instructors that exude and instill confidence. The curriculum is provided in a way that no matter your skill level, you can easily learn self-defense. OMAC is my school of choice.- Tony Kilburn

I have been training @ OMAC for about 2 months now and have nothing but praise and gratitude for the staff and culture that Sean and Anibal have created at Oregon Martial Arts. I walked in my first day and have been hooked ever since. The people there are an awesome bunch and are always willing to help. I?ve never once had a problem with feeling intimidated or concerned that my training partner is a meat head with no regards for the safety of his classmate. The facility is always clean when I show up for evening classes and I haven?t really had to worry about the common gym problems i?ve faced at other facilities. I?d highly recommend that people stop by and at the least watch a class to get a feel for what Oregon Martial Arts has to offer. You will not be disappointed. – Nathanael Oda

I trained here for about two years. I had a great experience and would still be training if I weren’t recovering from an injury. (I didn’t hurt myself at the gym; I don’t recommend doing one rep max squats.) I can’t recommend training with Anibal enough. Its like having a daily seminar where they bring in some expert black belt from Brazil. I’ve trained at other gyms years ago and been hampered by relentless and recurring ring worm from dirty mats and people. I don’t think I ever had a bout of ring worm or anything else from OMA. I watched them clean the mats regularly. All in all a great gym with good people and instruction. -Jason Tillotson, Police Officer

I’ve been taking the BJJ and Muay Thai classes at OMAC. It’s a great group of people, and every class is a great workout. Instruction’s excellent and very motivating. Everyone that you spar and roll with is there to help you as oppesed to just beating or breaking you. Instructors Sean Haley and Anibal Lobo are the only Pedro Sauer Association Representatives in the Portland Metro Area. They teach and ingrain moves to build muscle memory. You wont just learn something once and forget it the next day. I love this place and plan to be here for a long time. I can recommend this for anyone as long as they’re willing to leave some sweat on the floor. If you’re looking to be a fighter, or just for a more exciting workout, you should definitely check it out.- Adam Crosby

I attended OMAC for about a month and a half. During my time there I took both the adult Brazilian Jujitsu class, and an adult Muay Thai kick boxing class. I quickly built relationship with the staff and immediately began learning new valuable skills and techniques which I then employed during my time at West Point Military Academy. The skills, discipline and work ethic I learned in this gym were invaluable in my foundation for continuing my martial arts training in the army. This gym was run well, had good equipment and was kept very tidy and clean. If I was to recommend a gym to anyone to go and learn a martial art, I would definitely recommend OMAC.- Earl Brown, West Point Military Student

Oregon Martial Arts is a conducive place to study Jiu Jitsu. The level of instruction is rare. Anibal is a true Jiu Jitsu instructor and this level of education is very rare. Anibal is such a great instructor he went out of his way to make sure my Jiu Jistu education would continue in Europe. He set me up with a fantastic gym in Europe. As for the Oregan Martial Arts academy, I disagree with the previous rating. Its plenty clean and a great place to study Jiu Jitsu. Danniel Rolfe, Logistics and Event Coordinator at Hewlett-Packard?

I have been going to the OMA school off an on for years. My “off” reasons were only do to a previous injury that returned. I have been a MMA student for years, and my experience at OMA has been excellent. It’s great for beginners because there isn’t that unfortunate intimidation element in the club. And once you advance, the expectation and and intensity advances as well. The Jujitsu instruction has elevated with the addition of the new instructor Anibal Lobo. As in life itself, you get back what you put into it. The upside is you get a little extra due to the serious, yet courteous staff, clean gym and quality equipment. For newcomers to the sport, to the more serious minded, or someone like myself that is somewhere in between, you can’t go wrong at this gym.- David Cherry

In this first year of training at Oregon Martial Arts, I’ve lost 50lbs and been in the best shape I’ve been for some time (so much so that I completed my first half marathon and another race with two more coming this summer), and I medaled twice in a local Jiu Jitsu competition…. and I have the excellent trainers, training partners, and new friends at OMA to thank for that!

The instruction is excellent, you’ll be pushed physically and technically by people who really want to see you succeed. This is a school that has little use for big egos, and has something to offer students of all ranges. They also participate in many of the area seminars when experts present focused training sessions. My kids have visited while I trained, and if we lived closer, I would gladly enroll them in the youth classes and I know they would love it. I can’t recommend Oregon Martial Arts enough… and have to friends and family. Travis Johnson

Recently I returned to the United States after living in Europe where I trained full time in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for more than a year. I was very eager to locate a new academy to continue my studies of the “Gentle Art”, and began researching my options. Having been exposed to the teachings of BJJ under Brazilian born instructor Igor Araujo, I was determined to find another professor who, like Igor, embodied the essence of BJJ. An instructor capable of not only teaching this fine art, but also capable of educating me in it’s rich history and traditions. Finding such a professor in certain parts of the US can prove difficult at best, but I was determined to find high quality teaching and training in the Portland area, and lucky for me I did just that.

In a way, it’s unfortunate that with the surge in popularity in mixed martial arts over the recent years it subsequently can prove difficult to find a BJJ academy where “modern” competition methods and technique are taught, but the origins, the traditions, the “bread and butter” so to speak of BJJ is still emphasized and focused on. At Oregon Martial Arts in Tigard Oregon I found all of those things. I am now training under 1st Degree Black Belt Instructor Anibal Lobo in the Pedro Sauer Association and couldn’t be happier.

Anibal, along with Chief Instructor Sean Haley provide the perfect atmosphere and curriculum to enable any BJJ student, whether a “first timer” or seasoned veteran to grow, and evolve in their likely lifetime pursuit of BJJ mastery. Technique, above all else is emphasized followed by practical application in rolling sessions with a well-rounded and wonderful group of students. If a person is looking for a place to train hard, train smart and train effectively in BJJ, OMA is worth checking out. I feel it’s a privilege to train at OMA, and especially an honor to train with Anibal who provides a very unique opportunity in Oregon to be immersed in a culture and tradition that
only a man of his roots could provide. Come check us out, and join the family! Ossss.

When I started training here back in September of 2010, I weighed approximately 183 lbs and with the help of the teachers at Oregon Martial Arts, my self determination and the awesome work out programs that they offer, (like Muay Thai Kick Boxing and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu) I have seen my weight drop and body fat melt away.

I can’t say it was easy, because at times I was sore in areas that I’d never felt before. Another huge part of my weight loss was learning how to eat a healthy diet, smaller food portions, and eating six times a day rather then three large meals. That was a challenge at first but
now I feel satisfied.

I used to try all kinds of diets and even hired a personal trainer at the local gym i used to go to, only to spend tons of money and never reach my goals of weighing in at 145 lbs.

Honestly, I feel with out the non stop physical activity I endure during the classes I take at Oregon Martial Arts, I would of never have
seen results like I have today. I am happy to say, as of January 2011 I have reached my goal, weighing in at 145 lbs!  I am so proud of myself
and can’t thank the wonderful teachers at Oregon Martial Arts enough.

Thanks again for inspiring me to reach my goals Sean and Anibal!
